5 golden rules for internet safety

If we were to ask you what makes a good mortgage broker, looking after clients would be one of the top answers. We don’t just mean providing excellent customer service, we’re referring to your responsibility when it comes to handling sensitive client information.

A lot of data breaches happen due to human error, like responding to suspicious emails or leaving your laptop without supervision; and no matter how careful you are, it’s always a good idea to take some extra precautions.

Whether you’re part of a team or flying solo, we’ve got some tips for you on how to work online safely:

  1. Create strong passwords - This one is a no brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people have weak, easily hackable passwords! To make sure that your data is safe, avoid pet names or dates of birth, and opt for a strong combination of uppercase and lowercase letters - bonus points if you add a symbol and/or number. Also, don’t forget to change it every now and then!
  2. Recognise phishing emails - These are very common; however a lot of people still fall into the trap and click something that they’re not supposed to. If you run a team, make sure to let your employees know what to look out for, like terrible grammar and poorly designed email templates. The same applies if you are self-employed.
  3. Backup data - The importance of backing up information cannot be stressed enough. Accidents can happen; just imagine spilling your Costa coffee on your computer and losing everything! If you have a backup, there’s always less damage no matter what happens.
  4. Invest in anti-virus software - Getting anti-virus and anti-malware software for your devices is definitely a good idea. In fact, by adding another layer of protection you’ll have more peace of mind. Just don’t forget to keep it up to date!
  5. Use a management software - Using a management software and saying goodbye to paperwork lowers the risk of misplacing documents and the possibility of them ending up the wrong hands. With storing contacts, case information and financial documents online, it’s both easier for you to trace relevant information and it’s a more effective method for storing things safely. What is more, if you happen to lose your device you don’t automatically lose your data too!
  6. After reading our tips, consider what protection you have in place. Are you doing everything you can to safeguard your client and business data?
